One of many unforgettable experiences in Newfoundland - seeing our first icebergs!

We knew that making our way up toward St. Anthony and L'anse Aux Meadows in early July would mean it was a toss-up of whether or not we would see these floating giants making their trek down from Greenland.

We crossed our fingers, endured one of the bumpiest tows we have ever experienced, and basically lost our minds when we spotted our first one, peeking over the edge of a nearby cove.

We set up our RV in record time, immediately headed for the coast, and didn't stop running until we reached the edge.

Priceless.

50,000 breeding seabirds perched amid a stunning landscape of steep cliffs and vast tundra is a sight you won’t soon forget.

We arrived at Cape St Mary’s Ecological Reserve in the late afternoon and enjoyed a few hours of solitude with the birds on “bird rock” and the surrounding cliffs.

We watched them glide and soar, fish, cuddle with their babies, and heard a whole bunch of chatter.

A place and an experience difficult to describe in words.

Life is all about the choices you make and we are thankful for the ones we have made.

Regardless of what others may think or the assumptions that can be made (yes we work, no we didn’t win the lottery 😂) we couldn’t happier with how life is looking right now.

I mean how can it get much better than hiking along the epic coast of Newfoundland on just your average Saturday?

Save these tips for viewing puffins in Newfoundland:

✅ The best times to see puffins are early in the morning (7-10) and later in the evening (6-10).

✅ The best time of year to see puffins will be in summer (typically May- September)

✅ Bring binoculars! There is no guarantee that the puffins will come close enough to really appreciate with your bare eye and it is so fun to watch them in and around the holes they dig for nesting or in flight with their orange feet dangling out behind them

✅ If viewing on land (as opposed to a boat tour), sit tight just away from the cliffs edges and wait patiently. The puffins may just fly over from the islands where they are nesting and spend some time right next to you!

We had the best luck at Elliston Point and in Bonavista, but a largest colony is also located in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve on the Avalon Peninsula (although this requires a boat tour).
